Shall I compare thee to a barrel of apples? Though art more hairy, but sweeter inside. Rough winds couldn't keep me from taking you to chapel, Where finally a horse could take a bride...

About This Quote

This quote of William Shakespeare's is a reference to his play The Taming of the Shrew. In the play, Petruchio says this line to Kate, his fiancée. It is meant to be a charming compliment to Kate, who has been resisting marriage with Petruchio. She is the barrel of apples in contrast to Petruchio's smooth skin.

But Petruchio's words are also a ruse for the audience, who know that Kate is the real barrel of apples. Shakespeare uses this clever phrase to hint that Kate is really the one who will have to tame Petruchio. She has had more experience with men than he has had, and knows better how to deal with him.
